What is Raising Cane’s Sauce?

Raising Cane’s is a popular Southern American fast food restaurant chain – they opened their first store in California in 2015 and I remember being so excited to finally try their famous menu – their chicken fingers, Texas toast, and crinkle fries are all beloved but their famous Raising Cane’s Sauce is the cult favorite! It’s so popular that you can buy extra sauce in a 32 oz cup (I may or may not have done this myself!)

If you’ve never tried the sauce, it looks a little bit like Thousand Island dressing (the color, specifically) and has a creamy, tangy flavor with just a hint of spice. The specific recipe for Raising Cane’s Sauce is an official secret – but after much testing, I’ve come up with a recipe that tastes just like it! Keep reading for my TWO key tips!

Raising Cane’s Sauce Ingredients

Raw ingredients for Raising Cane's sauce on a table.

The official recipe is a Raising Cane’s secret but I’m confident that I’ve nailed it – ad you will be pleasantly surprised to know how simple this recipe is! Copycat Raising Cane’s Sauce only requires 6 ingredients (2 of them being salt and pepper) –

Key Tip #1

Use Freshly Ground Black Pepper

One of the key flavors of Raising Cane’s Sauce is the pepperiness – Raising Cane’s calls it “tangy with a little bit of spice”. The best way to recreate this is by using freshly ground black pepper – this is how you can get the best and boldest pepper flavor. Store bought black pepper loses flavor during storage and due to oxidation, so it will not have the same impact as freshly ground.

How to Make Raising Cane’s Sauce

Making Copycat Raising Cane’s Sauce is so easy – it’s only two steps!

First step is to prepare all of the ingredients – measure out the mayonnaise, liquid seasonings, and dry seasonings then add them into a bowl.

Second step is to mix all of the ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Cover and let chill in the refrigerator for 24 hours. I cannot stress how important this step is – the 24 hours allows all of the flavors of your Raising Cane’s Sauce meld together to create that iconic Raising Cane’s flavor.

Mixing the sauce in a bowl with a whisk.

Key Tip #2

Let it Rest for 24 Hours!

A secret of Raising Cane’s is that they supposedly do not use any sauce that has not rested for at least 24 hours – this may be why your homemade sauce does not taste the same! Mixing the ingredients together is only the first step – you need to let it rest for 24 hours in the refrigerator so the flavors can meld together. (If you skip this step, your sauce will most likely just taste like ketchup.) I promise the wait is worth it – make sure to let your Raising Cane’s sauce rest for 24 hours before enjoying it!

How to Store Homemade Raising Cane’s Sauce

  • You can store Homemade Raising Cane’s Sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Make sure your container is well sealed to prevent your Copycat Raising Cane’s Sauce from spoiling.
  • Avoid dipping directly into the jar and only use clean utensils – any bacteria from food or used utensils will make your Homemade Raising Cane’s Sauce go bad faster.
  • Don’t leave your Homemade Raising Cane’s Sauce out – put it back in the refrigerator after opening or using, as the mayo can lead to your Homemade Raising Cane’s Sauce going bad if left out.

What Should I Serve with Raising Cane’s Sauce?

Raising Cane’s is known for their Fried Chicken so it will go perfectly with all of my favorite chicken recipes (with a side of Milk Bread to make Texas Toast)! You can use it as a dipping sauce in lieu of spicy mayo for Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage or Air Fryer Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage. I would even drizzle it over Chicken Katsu (Air Fryer Chicken Katsu) or Pork Katsu! If you want to keep it on the lighter side, make any of my Air Fryer recipes – Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Air Fryer Chicken Tenders, or Air Fryer Chicken Thighs would all go great with Raising Cane’s Sauce!

I actually love dipping roasted vegetables in Raising Cane’s sauce, like Honey Roasted Carrots, Roasted Cauliflower, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts (Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts).

PRO TIPS

Why I love Making Homemade Sauces

I love making as many Sauces and Condiments at home as possible! It allows me to:

  • control the quality of my ingredients
  • avoid unnecessary additives or preservatives
  • I can customize it to my taste (I usually prefer sauces on the less sweet and more spicy side)

I would highly recommend you try making some of your favorite sauces or condiments at home as well!
