Let’s be honest, the best part of Jalapeño Poppers is the filling – so I decided to use all of the best parts and turn it into a creamy, cheesy, super addictive Jalapeño Popper Dip that will be the star of any gathering!

A Note from CJ

This is THE dip you need for gameday!

My Jalapeño Popper Dip gets rave reviews for everyone I make it for! It’s an amazing combination of fresh cheeses, seasonings and a slight hint of spice from the fresh jalapenos along with a fun crunchy topping that’s great for dipping!

Ingredient Tips

Refer to the recipe card for the full list of ingredients and measurements!

  • large jalapeños – I used 2 large jalapeños (diced) and would say this dip was flavorful and mildly spicy. If you want to add more heat, increase the number of jalapeños or add ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
  • cream cheese – for best results, use softened cream cheese. Otherwise, you may find it challenging to mix all of the ingredients together.
  • mayonnaise and sour cream – alongside the cream cheese, I use mayo and sour cream as binders. For a lighter version, you can use greek yogurt in lieu of sour cream.
  • for seasonings, I used kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. If you want to add more heat, you can add 1/2 tsp of cayenne pepper and use hot paprika in lieu of smoked paprika.
  • mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, and parmesan cheese (shredded) – I recommend using freshly shredded cheese for this recipe. Many preshredded cheese include anti-caking agents which will affect the texture of the dip.
  • Fritos Scoops – I like topping the Jalapeño Popper Dip with crushed Fritos because I think they hold up better texturally than other toppings and I like the salty flavor it adds. However, you can use whatever topping you prefer – other ideas include panko breadcrumbs, Ritz crackers, Doritos, tortilla chips, or pita chips.

How to Make Jalapeño Popper Dip

Cook the bacon and jalapeños and mix the dip ingredients

Preheat the oven to 375F. In a 9×13 baking dish or cast iron pan, add the diced jalapenos, cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, mozzarella cheese, and cheddar cheese. Use a spatula or wear a glove and mix until combined.

In a small bowl, mix the crushed Fritos with the parmesan cheese and sprinkle evenly over the dip.

Bake the Dip

Bake the dip for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly. Remove from the oven and let cool for 15 minutes before serving. Top with thinly sliced jalapeños (if desired) and serve with thick cut tortilla chips or Fritos scoops for dipping.

CJ’s Make Ahead and Storage Tips

This is the perfect appetizer for gatherings – so the most important tips are going to be how to make it ahead of time and how to store it (including leftovers) —

  • This is a dip that is best FRESH – hot and bubbly, straight from the oven. Don’t bake it ahead of time – pull it out right before your guests (or you) are ready to eat!
  • If you want to make this ahead of time, I recommend mixing the ingredients ahead of time (until step 2) and then covering with saran wrap in an oven safe dish in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When ready to bake, top with the crushed Fritos and pop into the oven (resume step 3).
  • Store any leftover Jalapeño Popper Dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Any leftover crushed Frito topping will become soft but the rest of the dip will taste delicious, even as leftovers. Reheat in the microwave until warmed through completely.

Notes

I recommend using freshly shredded cheese for this recipe. Many preshredded cheese include anti-caking agents which will affect the texture of the dip.
For a spicier kick, you can add another diced jalapeno or ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
I like using Fritos Scoops (vs. regular fritos) for this recipe which are thicker. You can crush them and they’ll stay crispy as the topping. You can use the rest as scoops for the tip!
