What is Chick-Fil-A Sauce?
Chick-Fil-A is an American fast food chain that is famous for their fried chicken sandwiches – but anyone who’s eaten there agrees that the real star of the menu is their signature Chick-Fil-A Sauce! It’s smoky, tangy, and rich with a hint of sweetness – there’s nothing quite like it!
The story goes that Chick-Fil-A Sauce was created by accident – an employee in Virginia accidentally mixed BBQ sauce into their signature honey mustard sauce and it became so popular that they continued to make it as a local Chick-Fil-A specialty for years! Once their Chick-Fil-A sauce was allowed to be sold in all Chick-Fil A stores, it only grew in popularity – it’s so popular that Chick-Fil-A has even started selling their sauces in grocery stores! But now there is no need to buy the store bought version when you can make it at home! ๐
What Ingredients do I need for Chick-Fil-A Sauce?
- barbecue sauce, I like Sweet Baby Rays Sweet & Smoky no sugar added, which has a distinct smokey flavor that’s VERY similar the one Chick-Fil-A sauce has. If you want to make a homemade version – I have a great homemade BBQ sauce recipe. You can also use your favorite BBQ sauce and add 1/4 tsp of liquid smoke.
- If you want to make your Chick-Fil-A sauce spicier, you can use a spicy barbecue sauce (if using store bought).
- mayo – I recommend full fat mayo in my Chick-Fil-A Sauce for the richness and creaminess, which will balance out the tang of the mustard, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. You can substitute with a lower fat mayo if you prefer.
- honey – the original Chick-Fil-A sauce was created by accident when an employee mixed bbq sauce with honey mustard; the honey adds sweetness to the smokey and tangy flavors.
- yellow mustard – this is plain yellow mustard! Any brand will do.
- If you want to make your Chick-Fil-A sauce spicier, you can use dijon mustard; you can also do this if you simply prefer the flavor of dijon over yellow mustard.
- apple cider vinegar
- lemon juice
- turmeric – this gives the Chick-Fila-A sauce some of that signature golden yellow color
- paprika
- salt

How to Make Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce
Making Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce is so easy – all you have to do is add all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix well! If you have the time, I would recommend letting the flavors meld together for 24 hours – this will always make any of your homemade sauces taste better!
Key Tip
How to Store Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce
- You can store Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Make sure your container is well sealed to prevent your Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce from spoiling.
- Avoid dipping directly into the jar and only use clean utensils – any bacteria from food or used utensils will make your Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce go bad faster.
- Don’t leave your Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce out – put it back in the refrigerator after opening or using, as the mayo can lead to your Homemade Chick-Fil-A Sauce going bad if left out.
What Should I Serve with Chick-Fil-A Sauce?
Chick-Fil-A is known for their Fried Chicken so it will go perfectly with all of my favorite chicken recipes (with a side of Milk Bread)! You can use it as a dipping sauce in lieu of spicy mayo for Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage or Air Fryer Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage. I would even drizzle it over Chicken Katsu (Air Fryer Chicken Katsu) or Pork Katsu! If you want to keep it on the lighter side, make any of my Air Fryer recipes – Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Air Fryer Chicken Tenders, or Air Fryer Chicken Thighs would all go great with Raising Cane’s Sauce!
I actually love dipping roasted vegetables in Chick-Fil-A sauce, like Honey Roasted Carrots, Roasted Cauliflower, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts (Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts).
