My deep love for Honey Mustard started as a kid, when I realized how it literally made everything taste better (not just chicken tenders and fries!) Once I started making Honey Mustard sauce at home, I was blown away by how simple it is. You only need 4 ingredients (plus salt and pepper) and it takes under 5 minutes to throw together!
Homemade Honey Mustard Ingredients
- full fat mayonnaise – For Homemade Honey Mustard, I recommend using full fat mayo for the richness and creaminess, which will balance out the tang of the vinegar. You can substitute with a lower fat mayo if you prefer.
- honey – You can adjust this to your preference – if you like a sweeter Honey Mustard, add more honey!
- Dijon mustard – If you like a spicier Honey Mustard, you can add more dijon mustard.
- distilled white vinegar – you can also use apple cider vinegar.
- kosher salt
- black pepper – I always recommend using freshly ground black pepper – pre-ground black pepper loses a lot of it’s flavor and pepperiness due to time in storage and oxidation. Freshly ground black pepper has a bold peppery flavor that cannot be beat, especially in homemade sauces.
My Other Favorite Homemade Sauces & Condiments
Some of my favorite recipes that you will love are:
- You have to try my Chinese Chili Oil – it’s so versatile and goes great with everything!
- Garlic Herb Compound Butter makes every meal feel extra special.
- Dumplings don’t taste the same without my homemade Dumpling Dipping Sauce!
- You can’t not make Tonkatsu Sauce when eating Chicken Katsu (Air Fryer Chicken Katsu) or Pork Katsu!
- Easy Homemade Ranch Dressing, Homemade BBQ Sauce, Chick-Fil-A Sauce, Raising Cane’s Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, Spicy Mayo, Thai Sweet Chili Sauce are perfect condiments for dipping!
How to Make Homemade Honey Mustard
Making Homemade Honey Mustard is so simple – all you have to do is add all of the ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix well!
Key Tip
Customize Your Honey Mustard
Make sure to taste your homemade Honey Mustard and customize it to your liking! That is the beauty of making your own sauce at home – you can make it exactly to your preference!
For example:
- If you prefer it sweeter, add more honey
- If you like it spicier, add more dijon mustard
- If you like it tangier, add more distilled white vinegar
- If you want a lower fat Honey Mustard, use a low fat mayo or mayo alternative
How to Store Homemade Honey Mustard
- You can store homemade Honey Mustard it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Make sure your container is well sealed to prevent your Honey Mustard from spoiling.
- Avoid dipping directly into the jar and only use clean utensils – any bacteria from food or used utensils will make your Honey Mustard go bad faster.
- Don’t leave your Honey Mustard out – put it back in the refrigerator after opening or using, as the mayo can lead to your Homemade Honey Mustard going bad if left out.
Key Tip
Make it a Salad Dressing!
You can use my homemade Honey Mustard sauce as a salad dressing without making any changes – some people prefer a thicker salad dressing! But if you are looking for a Honey Mustard salad dressing with a thinner consistency, it’s super easy – just add olive oil!
Take your mixed homemade Honey Mustard sauce and slowly drizzle in olive oil and mix until your preferred consistency. I would start with mixing in 2 tablespoons of olive oil and add more if needed.
What Should I Serve with Homemade Honey Mustard?
My favorite way to use Homemade Honey Mustard is as a dipping sauce for my favorite food in the world, Fried Chicken! I also like to use it in lieu of spicy mayo for Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage or Air Fryer Japanese Fried Chicken Karaage.
- If you want something lighter, try my Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Air Fryer Chicken Tenders, or Air Fryer Chicken Thighs.
Homemade Honey Mustard goes beautifully either drizzled over roasted vegetables, like Honey Roasted Carrots, Roasted Cauliflower, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts (Air Fryer Brussels Sprouts), or as a dipping sauce!
During the summer time, I’m always grilling and I love to have Homemade Honey Mustard with my Grilled Chicken Wings and Grilled Chicken Thighs!
