Ingredients
You only need 5 ingredients to make this (okay, 6 if you include the optional sugar!) These are ingredients that I always have in my pantry –
- Chili Oil: I always get asked what brand chili oil I use and I always say my own Chinese Chili Oil – after years of making chili oil at home, I personally think my recipe is the best! However, you can use any type of chili oil you prefer. It is totally okay if you prefer to use store bought!
- soy sauce
- Chinese Black Vinegar – I use Chinkiang vinegar, which is fragrant, slightly sweet, and the right amount of sour. As you explore my blog and check out some of my other recipes, you’ll see that I use this ingredient A LOT. If you are interested in cooking a lot of Chinese recipes at home, I would recommend you buy a bottle to add as a pantry staple.
- sesame seeds
- scallions
- sugar: This is optional for those who like their sauces on the sweeter side. (I do not, so I don’t add it.)
Make Your Sauce
Chop your scallions into small pieces. Set aside.
In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, Chinese black vinegar, chili oil, sesame seeds and chopped scallion. (See, I told you this was super easy!)

Need a Dumpling Recipe?
If you’re making my Dumpling Dipping Sauce, I assume you are eating Dumplings – one of my favorite foods in the world! I have a number of Dumpling recipes on my website – here are some of my favorites:
- If you are looking for a classic Chinese dumpling, you can’t beat my pan fried Pork Dumplings

I love to take any pan fried dumplings to the next level by making a Crispy Dumpling Skirt – the crispy skirt adds another texture and looks impressive (but is actually super simple to make!)
How to Pan-Fry Dumplings
In case you need a refresher, here is how I like to pan-fry my dumplings at home.
Start by adding 1 tbsp of neutral oil to an appropriately sized pan (this will be based on how many dumplings you are making). Heat the oil over medium high heat and lay your dumplings in the pan, fold side up. (See image below for reference).
Brown the bottom for 2-3 minutes to give the dumplings some color. Next, add enough water to cover about 1/3 of the way up the dumplings and cover with a lid. Once the water is added, cover and steam them for 5-6 minutes until the dumplings are cooked through and most of the water has evaporated. Finally, continue cooking them uncovered until the water is gone and the residual oil from the pan crisps up the bottom of your dumplings!
